This year's ice fishing contest was held on
a cold, but very bright sunny day, starting with breakfast, then
all participants were taken in teams of four to their fish huts,
from Bonnie Boats in Jackson's Point. This is an annual event, so if you did not participate
this year, make a date for next year, because a great day was had
by all. Contestants and sponsors should contact Mike Burrows at

York-North constituents Jeanne and John Pynn were honoured by the presentation of the 2002 Ontario Senior Achievement Award, at a presentation ceremony. The Hon. Janes K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario made the presentation and offered his congratulations to the couple.

Over 300 people gathered at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto to celebrate 10 remarkable stories of community innovation, partnership, impact and achievement. The Culture Minister, David Tsubouchi co-hosted the ceremony with OTF Chair, Robert G. Power, which recognized the impact of the Trillium grants across the province and the 150,000 volunteers who supported OTF-funded projects.

ONTARIO CRIME COMMISSION AWARD

Roy Hamilton received an Award of Excellence
in Crime Control from the Ontario Crime Control Commission to recognize
his contribution to the fight against crime in Ontario. Mr. Hamilton
was instrumental in getting Crime Watch started in his own community
and the town of East Gwillimbury.
The East Gwillimbury Community Action Committee also received an
Award of Excellence in Crime Control to recognize their contribution.
The committee members liaise with York Regional Police in an attempt
to make a safer environment in the community.
Former Premier Mike Harris appointed the Commission in April 1997
to put the government's commitment to crime prevention, more effective
law enforcement and a balanced criminal justice system into action.
The Crime Control Commission was created to listen to the public's
concerns, consult with experts and recommend specific steps the
government can take to build a safer Ontario.

York Region Heart Health Program launched their
new walking club in the Upper Canada Mall in May, 2002. Julia Munro
was there to give her support for this novel program for residents
of Newmarket and the surrounding townships of York Region.
They hope to encourage more and more people to come to the Upper
Canada Mall to join the club and walk with them on a regular basis.
Thus promoting a great way to stay in shape, aimed at men, women
and children of all ages.

CHEQUE PRESENTATION TO LOCAL POLICE

Julia Munro, MPP for York North and Tina Molinari,
MPP for Thornhill presented two cheques to the Regional Municipality
of York Chair Bill Fisch and Richmond Hill Regional Councillor and
Chair of the York Regional Police Services Board David Barrow on
behalf of the Hon.David Turnbull, Solicitor General of the Province
of Ontario. This presentation took place on Wednesday, March 27,
2002 at York Regional Police Headquarters, Newmarket.
The first cheque in the amount of $964,622.45 will be made payable
to the Regional Municipality of York for the final installment of
the 2001/2002 fiscal year which covers the salary, benefits, and
overtime costs associated with the hiring of 79 new front line officers
under the Community Policing Partnerships program (C.P.P.).
The second cheque in the amount of $30,000.00 from the Youth Crime
and Violence Initiative, Prevention and Enforcement Grant program,
will be made payable to the York Regional Police Services Board.
The police and their partners in Public Health and Education are
working together to build resiliency in youth as a strategy to support
the "Together We Can Stop Bullying" project. The funding
will assist in the development of teaching resources for the classroom
as well as a community marketing campaign and media kit. It is anticipated
that some of this material will be ready for classroom use in the
fall of 2002.

OTF FUNDS FOR LITTLE

Young Curling enthusiasts will step onto the
rink this season with a handful of support from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation. On February 9, York North MPP Julia Munro and GRT chair
Anne Pegg announced a $17,000 OTF grant to purchase junior stones
for the club's Little Rock Program.
Established in 1943, the Sutton Curling Club has members aged 6
to 75. "Our mandate is to provide an opportunity for the community
to participate in curling," said club president Bob Clark.
"And what better investment can we make than one in our children?"
"It's a great sport that promotes self-confidence and good
sportsmanship for everyone - especially our little rockers,"
said program coordinator Nicki Charbonneau.

Georgina celebrates the announcement of a huge
grant for Water & Sewer Works. The Town of Georgina will receive
two-thirds of the funding for eligible costs from the federal Canada-Ontario
Infrastructure Programme and the provincial SuperBuild Fund for
the Willow Beach and Surrounding Lakeshore Communities Water and
Sewage Project. "We are delighted that this project will soon
be under way," a jubilant Mayor Holec said. "Because of
malfunctioning private septic systems and local wells that are contaminated,
a new communal water system for our community is one of our highest
public health and safety priorities," Mayor Holec stated.
"In addition to the obvious benefits of safe water, residents
will have an improved quality of life with a reliable source of
water, and as a side benefit, the system will eliminate 2 tonnes
of phosphorus leaching into Lake Simcoe," the Mayor added.
